In the Summer of 2016, two professional hockey players and an Island businessman teamed up to take over the Marina West Motel and Marina in Tofino. Former Vancouver Canucks Willie Mitchell and Dan Hamhuis in partnership with Andrew Purdey of Mill Bay Marine Group signed the deal to buy the the 63-room motel, restaurant and marina.
On the resort’s Facebook page, Mitchell posted: “We are committed to making it one of the best blue-collar marinas in the Pacific Northwest by adding fresh resources, energy, and eyes to the property. All three of us are B.C. boys from small towns who have a passion for fishing, the outdoors, our oceans and that small town camaraderie.” The new owners will hold a meet-and-greet summer barbecue at the resort.
The property has since undergone a complete rebrand to Tofino Resort + Marina.
